Privacy Policy

The short version

This site uses Cloudflare Web Analytics to see how it is doing. It sets no cookies and does not fingerprint your browser, and this site still has no contact form and no mailing list. We do not collect, store or sell personal information about you. Three things do happen that involve your data, and they are described below: Cloudflare's analytics script counts your visit, the companies that deliver this site see your connection, and the companies you reach through an affiliate link see your click.

Who runs this site

What to Buy in Japan is published at https://paltouch.com/whattobuyinjapan/. For anything in this policy, write to [email protected].

What this site collects

This site uses Cloudflare Web Analytics. It sets no cookies and does not fingerprint your browser. What we see is aggregated counts, such as page views, referrers, country and browser type, and never anything that identifies you as an individual. There is no advertising pixel, no form to fill in and no email address to give us. The free checklist downloads directly; it is not behind a sign-up. The script is served by Cloudflare, and that processing is covered by Cloudflare's privacy policy.

Hosting and delivery

The pages are static files served through GitHub Pages and Cloudflare. To deliver a page and to protect against abuse, those providers process connection data such as your IP address, the browser you use and the time of the request. That processing is theirs, under their own policies: GitHub's privacy statement and Cloudflare's privacy policy.

Affiliate links

Some pages carry affiliate links, and every page that does says so at the top. At the time of writing the only one is to Rakuten Travel, through the affiliate network Rakuten Advertising.

If you click that link, Rakuten Advertising and Rakuten Travel record the click and may set cookies in your browser so that a later booking can be attributed to this site. We never see your name, your booking or your payment details. What reaches us is a count of clicks and, if a booking completes, a commission figure. Their handling of that data is covered by Rakuten Advertising's privacy policy.

If you do not want that to happen, do not click the link. You can reach Rakuten Travel directly instead, and nothing about your visit changes.

Other links

We link to government customs pages and to company websites so you can check things at the source. Those sites have their own policies and we do not control them.

Your choices

Your rights

Under the GDPR, the UK GDPR, the CCPA and CPRA and similar laws you have rights to see, correct and delete the personal data a company holds about you, and to opt out of its sale or sharing.

We hold none, so in practice there is nothing for us to show you or delete. We do not sell or share personal information, because we do not have any. If you write to us to exercise a right, that is the answer you will get, and we will say it in writing. To exercise rights against Rakuten Advertising or any site you reached through a link, contact that company directly.

Children

This site is written for adults planning a trip or a purchase. It is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect anything from anyone.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it. If what this site collects changes again — for example a mailing list or a different analytics tool — this page will say so before that change goes live.

See also the disclosure page, which covers who writes this site and how affiliate links are marked.
