PLAN THE TRIP

Where to Stay in Osaka and Kyoto for a Shopping Trip

Written in Japan. Two cities that are close enough to treat as one base if you choose the station carefully.

Osaka and Kyoto are about fifteen minutes apart by express train. You can base yourself in either and day-trip to the other, which means the decision is really about which city you want to be in during the evening.

Osaka: Namba

The right base if shopping is the point of the trip. Shinsaibashi runs north from the station as a covered arcade of roughly six hundred shops, with drugstores clustered thickly at the southern end. Den Den Town, the electronics and hobby district, is a ten-minute walk. Food is everywhere and cheaper than Tokyo.

It is loud at night. If that matters, look at the blocks west of the arcade rather than on it.

Osaka: Umeda

Better for connections than for browsing. Three department stores sit on the station, and the trains to Kyoto, Kobe and Nara all leave from here. Choose Umeda if you are moving around the region most days and Namba if you are staying put and shopping.

Kyoto: around the station

Convenient rather than atmospheric. A department store sits over the platforms, the bus network starts here, and the bullet train leaves from the same building. Good for a short stay or a final night before flying out of Kansai.

Kyoto: Karasuma and Kawaramachi

Where to stay if you want to walk out of the hotel into the city rather than onto a concourse. Nishiki market, the covered shopping streets and most of the craft shops are within fifteen minutes on foot. Rooms cost more and the subway is less dense than Tokyo, so check the walk before booking.

One base or two

For under five nights, pick one and day-trip. Moving hotels costs half a day once you count packing, checking out and checking in. If you do move, the courier network will take the suitcase for you; the trip planning page covers how that works.

Rakuten Travel shows the domestic rate in yen for both cities, which is usually where the smaller ryokan appear.
